"John Wooden once said, "The true test of a man's character is what he does when no one is watching." As a football coach, Jet is on display for the school to see, however, as his co-teacher I am privy to observe him with his players off the field and in our classroom. The care and love to which he delivers to each and every student athlete is beyond devotional. It is my honor to be his partner and to witness the growth of his players every year." - Kim Matchniff Co-Teacher/Special Education Department PhD Candidate North Mesquite High School
"I have a trust factor with him...he is a foxhole guy." - Luke Goode A.D./Head Football Coach Elkhart HS
"He taught me more than just the game. He taught me how to change, to break the cycle so I wouldn't become someone I shouldn't be. He also taught me about the game, in a way you can use it in life situations. This man has become my best friend, my brother, my father figure. He is family to me. I don't know where I would be if I didn't have him in my life." - Chase Graham Granite Redevelopment, LLC 2010 4A 1st Team All-State DB Dr. Ralph H. Poteet HS
"Not only does Jet bring out the best in the abilities of the student-athletes he coaches, but he is able to forge meaningful relationships with those kids. He's that coach that former athletes point to as the coach that made a difference. The one that taught them more than X's and O's. The one who taught them about life." -Doug Robinson Head Track/CC Coach Dallas Jesuit Preparatory HS
"During my two seasons under Coach Carriker, I saw my skill and stats increase. I won All-District Honors and District MVP my Senior year. He prepared me for the next level as I went on to play D1 football. He coached our offense with intensity everyday but we had a lot of fun. Not only is he a great coach but he is a great person and family man. He took the time to get to know me on a different level and was always there for me in any life situation. We still keep in touch nearly everyday almost eight years later." - Derrick Teegarden Paradigm Valve Group, Midland, TX 2009 2-5A Offensive MVP Odessa HS

Philosophy Statement
I feel that for an individual to perform at his or her highest level they must first do what is beneficial for the team at hand. I feel that it is vital for a person to understand the unity of a team concept, and realize that a team goal is bigger than individual aspirations. I believe that every person should have a role with responsibility in order to make a common vision happen. Without the unity and personal commitment to a team philosophy, no single goal can be achieved. Reaching those personal goals should be earned as a result of being a team player and should in no way be handed to an individual. I am a firm believer in the concept of caring, rather than caretaking. I find it better for an individual to teach me a skill that will benefit me in future endeavors, in comparison to having a job already completed for me. A great thing about a great person is their ability to be trustworthy with an ability to fulfill any commitment thrown their way. There will be many times I will not know the answer to a question; I find it to be irresponsible and dishonest to provide an answer to a rule or concept I know nothing about. Instead, I will actively find the answer to the problem presented all while maintaining trust and commitment to a given issue. Pursuing unknown answers is not a difficult concept as long as continuous flow of communication, enthusiasm, and want-to is present every step of the way. One must stay the course. It is a fairly easy concept, failing to invest time and energy will provide a consistent outcome of failure and bad attitude, two characteristics that bring down a team. It also can result in games and championships lost. I find it important to look inward, into the process, the system, and more importantly the people who have come before me. These are the people who will help and inspire the success I one day wish to have. While listening to the ones who have set the bar, I feel a sense of adaptation and ability to acquire thick skin will aid in the advancement of my career. Shutting out a person who is stronger than you is a great way to reduce any chance of success you desire. A person can have many goals, along with many concepts to reach those goals, but the fact of the matter is getting up every day with a strong attitude of self and hard work. Goals look excellent on paper, but words on a sheet do not fulfill the satisfaction of achieving a cause.
“Be very careful about judging people and their credentials. You don't know where they are, and you don't really know where they've been.” -Debbie Yow Director of Athletics at North Carolina State
